How to choose the right watch strap
A new watch strap changes the character of your watch instantly: a dive watch on a leather watch strap is ready for the office, and a dress watch on a NATO strap becomes an easy everyday companion. At OhMyStrap! you will find carefully selected watch straps in leather, rubber, silicone, nylon and stainless steel, in widths from 18 to 26 mm.
Three things decide whether a new strap fits perfectly: the material, the correct width and the right length. The tips below help you choose.
Which strap material suits your watch?
- Leather: timeless and elegant. Calfskin is fine and supple, crazy horse leather develops a beautiful patina over time, and suede and nubuck look soft and modern. Ideal for dress watches, pilot watches and vintage pieces, but not for swimming.
- Rally and racing straps: leather with the classic motorsport-style holes, such as the Rally Watch Strap DAYTO. A perfect match for chronographs.
- Rubber (FKM): waterproof, tough and pleasantly soft. The first choice for dive watches, sport and summer.
- Silicone and hybrid: light, easy to care for and available in many colours. The HYBRID Watch Strap combines sporty comfort with a refined look.
- NATO and nylon: durable, affordable and quick to change. A classic on field and military watches.
- Stainless steel: long-lasting and premium, such as the Fishbone Stainless Steel Bracelet with folding clasp.
How to measure lug width in 30 seconds
-
The most important measurement when buying a strap is the lug width: the width of the strap where it meets the case. Use a ruler or calliper to measure the distance between the two lugs of your watch in millimetres. The most common lug widths are 18, 20 and 22 mm.
Tip: the width is often printed on the back of your old strap or listed in your watch manual. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, because a strap that is too narrow looks lost. For every strap we also list the buckle width, the width at the clasp end.
Finding the right strap length
Most watch straps come in two pieces: the short piece with the buckle and the long piece with the holes. Each product lists both lengths, for example 7.5 cm | 12 cm. This standard length fits most wrists with a circumference of about 15 to 20 cm.
NATO and nylon straps are made in one piece and adjust continuously, which makes them ideal if you are between sizes.
How to change a watch strap yourself
You can change your strap at home in just a few minutes. A spring bar tool compresses the spring bars so you can remove the old strap and fit the new one. Many of our straps already come with matching spring bars (see “spring bars” in the technical details).
You will find tools, spare spring bars and quality pin buckles in our watch tools section. To see how a good buckle improves comfort, read our blog post on the Fitwell watch buckles.
Watch strap FAQ
Measure the distance between the two lugs of your watch in millimetres. This is the lug width, for example 20 mm. The width is often printed on the back of your old strap as well.
Straps made of rubber (FKM), silicone, nylon and stainless steel are waterproof. Avoid wearing leather straps for swimming or showering, as water can make leather stiff and brittle.
What matters is that the strap width matches the lug width of your watch exactly. If the width is right, the strap fits almost any watch with spring bars, whatever the brand.
Use a spring bar tool to compress the spring bar on the watch and remove the old strap. Insert the spring bar into the new strap, position it between the lugs and let the spring bar click into place. Finally, give the strap a gentle pull to check it is secure.
A rally or racing strap is a leather strap with large holes inspired by classic driving gloves. It comes from the motorsport scene of the 1960s and 1970s and pairs especially well with chronographs.
High-quality FKM rubber is especially durable, dust-resistant and keeps its shape, which makes it ideal for dive watches. Silicone is softer, lighter and usually cheaper, but shows wear sooner. Both materials are waterproof.
